Start the new year with new skills

Start 2024 off on the right foot and learn a new skill with Accessible Arts & Media.

We’re hosting a training event to help you get to grips with Signalong - a sign-supported communication system that we use in our projects here at AAM.

What is Signalong?

Signalong is a keyword sign-supported communication system based on British sign language (BSL) and is used in spoken word order. It forms part of our Total Communication approach and uses speech, sign language, facial expression, and voice tone to communicate the link between sign and word.

We use Signalong in our projects as it’s a great accessible communication tool for people with communication difficulties.

This course is perfect for:

• Anyone wanting to learn about sign-supported communication

• Anyone volunteering or working in a capacity with young people or adults with communication difficulties

• Anyone who knows a bit of Signalong and wants to brush up on their skills

What happens on the day?

Throughout the day we’ll teach the methodology of how to form signs correctly and clearly, the vocabulary associated with Signalong and most importantly, how keyword signing works. There’ll be a break for lunch, then we'll put your skills into action with fun communication games and a song or two.

When: Saturday 13th January, 10am - 3pm

Where: New Earswick Folk Hall, Hawthorn Terrace, YO32 4AQ

Cost: Free – Suggested donation £10

Lunch won’t be provided, however, New Earswick Folk Hall’s café has a great, affordable selection of hot and cold food available. Feel free to bring a packed lunch if you’d prefer.
