National Volunteer Week 2022

Wednesday 1st June marks the first day of National Volunteers’ Week. It takes place every year and it’s where we get the chance to put a spotlight on some of the volunteer heroes here at AAM. A week when we get to say a massive thanks to everyone who has helped throughout the years. And a week when we get to share some of their experiences. So, let’s meet a few of them shall we?

First up, there’s Jodie. Jodie volunteers at our weekly IMPs session and is currently doing a Masters at the University of York. She joined us to gain experience of working with disabled young people and to encourage inclusivity through music.

Asked what she loves about volunteering with us, Jodie said “I’ve enjoyed working with talented, inspiring young people”. Most of all, she enjoys seeing them “reach their full potential through creative music including song writing, instrument playing and singing and signing!”.

We’ve gained so much from having Jodie on board, and she’s been able to take away new skills too. These include learning Signalong as a communication tool and leading different groups, both of which we hope to continue to nurture with her. We’re so grateful for all of Jodie’s support, so here’s to you, our volunteer hero!

Next up, we’ve got Shirley. Shirley volunteers at our weekly Movers and Shakers sessions at New Earswick Folk Hall.

Shirley had previously volunteered with organisations such as Horticap and Outside the Box and was looking for something similar when she moved to York. Luckily for us, she saw our fantastic choirs perform at New Earswick a few years ago and was keen to get involved.

When asked about her time volunteering with us, she says, “It was great to meet Alison and Kate and their enthusiasm and passion for what they do is infectious! I’m continuing to learn through them as I watch them engage with the different members of the group.

We love having Shirley on board and Wednesdays wouldn’t be the same without her. Thank you, Shirley, you help make AAM AAM-azing!
